Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the muscles underneath to create a smoother, firmer stomach. Many patients consider a tummy tuck after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or changes that happen with age. Dr. Mafi performs it in Fresno, California, and carefully places the incision low on the abdomen so it can be hidden beneath most underwear and swimsuits.

What is a
Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles underneath. The result is a smoother, firmer, and more defined stomach. Many patients consider a tummy tuck after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or changes that come with aging have left them with loose skin or stretched abdominal muscles.

One of the most important parts of a tummy tuck is tightening the abdominal muscles. Pregnancy and significant weight changes can cause the muscles in the middle of the abdomen to separate, which is known as diastasis recti. During surgery, Dr. Mafi can bring these muscles back together to create a firmer abdominal wall and a flatter stomach. This can also provide added support to the core and, in some patients, may help with back discomfort.

Your tummy tuck begins with a detailed consultation. Dr. Mafi will review your medical history, examine your abdomen, and discuss your goals so he can create a treatment plan specifically for you. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with the incision placed low on the abdomen so it can be hidden beneath most underwear and swimsuits. Excess skin and fat are removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and liposuction may be added to further shape and contour the waist and abdomen. If you have a previous C-section or other abdominal scar, it may be possible to remove it and incorporate it into the tummy tuck incision.

Swelling, tightness, and discomfort are common during the first one to two weeks and gradually improve as you heal. Most patients can return to their normal activities within four to six weeks, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided until Dr. Mafi clears you to resume them.

The result is a flatter, firmer, and more contoured abdomen. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your results can be long-lasting, while the incision gradually fades and remains discreetly hidden along the swimsuit line.

A tummy tuck addresses three layers of the abdomen: excess skin, excess fat, and the underlying abdominal muscles. Dr. Mafi removes extra skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles, creating a flatter, firmer, and more defined midsection.

When the abdominal muscles have separated, Dr. Mafi brings them back together during the tummy tuck. This helps create a flatter, firmer abdomen while also strengthening and supporting the core. In some patients, this repair may also help reduce back discomfort.

The tummy tuck incision is placed low on the abdomen so it can be easily hidden beneath most underwear and swimsuits. If you have a C-section or other abdominal scar, Dr. Mafi may be able to remove it and incorporate it into the tummy tuck incision. The scar will gradually fade over time and is designed to remain as discreet as possible.

Complications are uncommon, but it is important to understand the possible risks, including fluid buildup, changes in sensation, and scarring. After surgery, you will receive detailed instructions specific to your procedure and recovery. Following these instructions closely can help support proper healing and the best possible result.

Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Loose skin and fat taken away, and the muscles underneath put back together.

Every plan follows an in-person evaluation of your medical history, your abdominal area and your goals. A tummy tuck may be worth discussing if you have:

Loose Skin After Pregnancy

Skin and fat across the abdomen that never tightened back up after a pregnancy.

Skin After Weight Change

Excess skin and fat left behind by a significant change in weight.

Firmness Lost With Age

An abdomen that has gradually lost its firmness over the years.

Separated Muscles

Rectus diastasis, where the vertical abdominal muscles have separated.

A Weakened Core

Core strength you have not been able to rebuild, and back pain the repair may ease.

A C-Section Scar

An abdominal scar you would like removed and integrated into the tummy tuck scar.

Common questions about a tummy tuck

Drains may be used after a tummy tuck to remove extra fluid that can build up under the skin while your abdomen heals. This helps reduce swelling and lowers the chance of a fluid buildup. Not every patient will need drains. Dr. Mafi will decide if they are needed based on your surgery and how much skin and tissue is removed. If you do have drains, they are temporary and will be removed once there is very little fluid coming out, usually within the first one to two weeks after surgery.
