Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, reduces excess breast tissue in men to create a flatter, firmer chest and a more masculine contour. Excess fat and tissue are removed using liposuction, surgical removal, or a combination of both, under general anesthesia. Dr. Parham Mafi performs it in Fresno, California.

What is
Gynecomastia
Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, reduces excess breast tissue in men. Enlarged or overdeveloped male breasts can follow hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, genetics, or other factors, and the condition often causes real distress or self-consciousness in social and intimate situations.

The operation removes excess tissue, fat, or glandular components from the chest. The result is a flatter, firmer, and more defined chest contour. At Mafi Plastic Surgery the plan is personalized: Dr. Mafi builds it around your own anatomy and your own goals rather than applying one approach to everyone.

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so you will be comfortable throughout the procedure. Incisions are carefully placed based on your individual anatomy, usually around the areola or along the underside of the chest, to help keep scars as discreet as possible. Excess tissue and fat are then removed using liposuction, surgical removal, or a combination of both, depending on your needs. The chest is then shaped to create a flatter, firmer, and more natural-looking contour. Most procedures take one to two hours.

You will go home wearing a compression garment to support your chest and help reduce swelling. Some soreness, bruising, and swelling are normal after surgery and will gradually improve over the following weeks. Most patients can return to light activities within about a week, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks. Full recovery can take several months as swelling continues to decrease and your chest settles into its new shape.

The results of gynecomastia surgery are typically permanent. With a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle, a firmer, flatter chest can be maintained for years.

The treatment depends on how much extra tissue and fat needs to be removed. Dr. Mafi may use liposuction, surgical removal, or a combination of both, then carefully shape the chest to create a flatter, firmer, and natural-looking result.

You are placed in a compression garment after surgery to support the chest and hold swelling down. Your aftercare instructions cover how long to wear it, how to manage discomfort, and when each activity can resume.

Most patients are back to light activity within a week. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting wait four to six weeks, and the chest keeps settling for several months after that.

Common questions about gynecomastia surgery

Exercise can reduce chest fat, but true gynecomastia involves excess glandular breast tissue, and no amount of training removes that. This is why the condition can persist in men who are otherwise fit. If your chest has not changed despite consistent training, an examination can tell you whether the fullness is fat, glandular tissue, or both, and surgery is the treatment that addresses the tissue itself.
