Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the size and shape of the breasts with implants placed over or under the chest muscle, depending on your anatomy. Patients come to it to increase size, to restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight change, or to address asymmetry. Dr. Parham Mafi plans each case in Fresno, California.

What is Breast
Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, enhances breast size and shape using implants placed over or under the chest muscle, depending on your anatomy. Patients choose it to increase size, to restore volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or to even out asymmetry.

The plan is made with you rather than for you. Your goals and expectations are talked through in detail first, because the size, the type of implant, where it sits and where the incision goes are all decisions that follow from what you want and what your own anatomy allows.

Saline implants are filled once they are in place; silicone implants arrive pre-filled. Either can be positioned over or under the chest muscle. The incision is most often made in the crease under the breast; in select cases it can be placed around the areola, an approach more typical when augmentation is combined with a lift, and Dr. Mafi will explain what each option means for your result.

Surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Recovery is generally well tolerated, although swelling, soreness and mild bruising are expected for a couple of weeks afterward. You wear a supportive bra or compression bandage as directed and avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks, and anything that looks like infection or a complication is a reason to call the office rather than wait for your next visit.

Implants are not lifetime devices. Your result evolves with age and weight change, and further surgery may be needed at some point to maintain or replace them.

Saline implants are filled during surgery. Silicone implants come pre-filled. Which one suits you is decided together, once Dr. Mafi has examined you and heard what you are hoping for.

An implant can be placed over or under the chest muscle. The choice follows your anatomy and your goals rather than a house preference.

Most often in the crease under the breast, where it is well concealed. In select cases the incision can be placed around the areola, an option more typical when augmentation is combined with a lift. Which is used depends on the implant and on the plan you agree on together.

Risks include capsular contracture, infection, implant rupture, and rare conditions such as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). These are discussed in full at your consultation, before you decide anything.

Am I a candidate for breast augmentation?

Volume you choose, in proportions that stay unmistakably your own.

Implant type, placement and incision are all settled after an in-person examination and a conversation about what you want. Breast augmentation may be worth discussing if:

Increase Breast Size

You would like your breasts to be fuller than they are now.

Restore Lost Volume

Volume changed after pregnancy or after losing weight.

Even Out Asymmetry

One breast differs noticeably from the other in size or shape.

A Balanced Proportion

Fullness that sits naturally with your frame rather than against it.

Self-Image and Confidence

You want to feel more at ease and more confident in your own body.

Clear Expectations

You have talked your goals through with a surgeon and understand that implants are not lifetime devices.
